CHAPTER FIFTY.

MEL KNEW her sister was a nervous wreck on the day of hearing. It was just an information gathering meeting, with several TSP bigwigs, Elliott, and both the mayor and governor. Brynna had done absolutely nothing wrong. Mel had tried to tell her that.

It didn’t matter.

Whenever Brynna had to talk to large groups of people—and to her, anything larger than her family was too big—her sister freaked out. Mel wished she could go in with her, but she knew that wasn't going to happen. She had to content herself to waiting, next to her father, Jillian and Lacy. Lacy was also scheduled to testify regarding the attack on her. She was just as tense as Brynna. But she was holding herself together.

Mel closed her eyes and winced when they were told that the hearing had been moved down the street. To Houghton’s hotel. She couldn’t escape him, could she?

As if he knew exactly what she was thinking, and Mel was beginning to wonder, she looked up and there he was walking around the hotel like he owned it.

Which he most certainly did.

St. Louis had not cured her of Houghton; not at all. The addiction was still there.

Pitiful. She was turning into a sappy, wishy-washy, pathetic woman. All she seemed to want right now was the man who'd abducted her.

She shook her head and waved him away when he would've joined them. She had just seen him not three hours earlier, when he’d had his staff prepare a big breakfast—of Brynna’s favorites. He’d easily sensed her sister was frightened. And he’d tried to help in his own Houghton way.

But now wasn't the time for her to deal with Houghton Barratt. He paused and nodded, though Mel sensed she had hurt him.

A pang went through her. Mel didn't want that.

She smiled softly and cocked her head toward her father, wordlessly telling Houghton that she wasn't angry with him. That she just didn't think he needed to be right there with them at that moment. His expression cleared, and he lifted a hand to his mouth and blew her a kiss. Then grinned outrageously.

Melded bit back a laugh; Houghton really was larger-than-life at times, wasn't he?

The man enjoyed doing whatever he could to get a reaction out of her. And she had to admit, he was good at getting reactions out of her, of any kind. From the first word he ever said to her, to him kidnapping her, to him meeting her at the airport and commandeering her and her sister…. When he kissed her, all of it—did he do it just to get reactions? Had she not realized before that that was exactly what he was doing?

"Melody?" Her father called her name and pulled her attention back to him. "Are you happy staying with him? You can come back home. Anytime, you know."

It was the only time he'd ever asked her about her plans for her and Houghton. Mel appreciated his respecting her privacy; she did not think she would have had the same restraint.
